PURPOSE: The World Development Information Day was established in 1972 by the United Nations Assembly resolution 3038 (XXVII). to draw the attention of the world to development problems and the need to strengthen international cooperation to solve them. The Assembly decided that the date for the Day should coincide with United Nations Day, 24 October, which was also the date of the adoption, in 1970, of the International Development Strategy for the Second United Nations Development Decade. The Objectives of this day are to improve the dissemination of information and the mobilization of public opinion, particularly among young people, to raise awareness of the problems of development and to Promote efforts in the sphere of international cooperation for development. The UNDP’s work, adapted to a range of country contexts, is framed through three broad development settings. These three development challenges often coexist within the same country, requiring tailored solutions that can adequately address specific deficits and barriers. Underpinning all three development challenges is a set of core development needs, including the need to strengthen gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, and to ensure the protection of human rights.

The Commitment to Development Index ranks 40 of the world’s most powerful countries on their dedication to policies that affect more than five billion people living in poorer nations. The CDI scores countries relative to their size and economic weight to measure countries according to their potential to help. CDI Countries range from middle to high-income; to level the playing field, we have an option to income-adjust, or rank relative to income-predicted scores. Sweden takes first place. France is second and Norway is in third place. Sweden and France also top the environment component, each applying a relatively high price to carbon and Sweden has relatively low emissions per head. The US ranks 22nd, with strong contributions on security and trade, but low scores on diffusing technology and safeguarding the environment. PARTNERSHIPS

The United Nations General Assembly had the object of drawing the attention of world public opinion each year to development problems and the necessity of strengthening international co-operation to solve them. The United Nations also recognizes that sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth is crucial in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with employment creation and social development as pillars of healthy growth in the world economy. The Economic Analysis and Policy Division (EAPD) monitors global macroeconomic trends and prospects and formulates advice for international policy coordination. In recent years many events have interpreted the title of the day slightly differently. These have concentrated on the role that modern information-technologies, such as the Internet and mobile telephones free from digital divide can play in alerting people and finding solutions to problems of trade and development. One of the specific aims of World Development Information Day was to inform and motivate young people and this change may help to further this aim.

  • Provide systematic analysis of the global economy and development policy

  • Offer useful guidance for the implementation of strategies for sustainable development.

  • Identify and lead research on frontier and emerging issues, as well as other economic challenges for countries in conflict and countries in special situations.

  • Monitor the status of least developed countries (LDCs) – low-income countries confronting severe structural impediments to sustainable development

  • Enhance the LDCs’ capacities in achieving sustainable growth.

  • Help to manage capacity development projects, by providing assistance through research, training and workshops
